(NaturalHealth365) “High-Volume Hydraulic Fracturing,” or fracking, is the process where companies drill down into the earth with the use of water, sand and deadly chemicals (sometimes to the tune of 40,000 gallons per job) in order to extract oil and gas. In recent years, however, individuals as well as government entities have begun to take action against this deadly practice.

Just last month, the state of Maryland passed a 2.5 year moratorium on fracking, following the New York State ban in 2014. Entire countries have also banned it, including Scotland and Wales over the last year. Movies like Gasland, Gasland 2, Frack Nation and Unearthed: The Fracking Façade plus campaigns such as those promoted by the non-profit Breast Cancer Action have indeed shifted the popular consciousness – especially when it comes to chemical leakage from fracking operations that could lead to contamination in local drinking water supplies.

What effect does fracking have on breast cancer?

The evidence is mounting and the connection is clear. Over 700 chemicals (many of them linked to breast cancer) are used in the under-regulated fracking industry and the high incidence of the dis-ease in areas where fracking still occurs is high.

Studies have linked high incidences of cancer, including breast cancer, to areas where fracking occurs. One such study by regulators in Texas concluded that “…female Breast Cancer had a higher than expected number of cases in the area.” A three-year study published in 2012 by the University of Colorado, School of Public Health also found cancer-related as well as non-cancer related health risks from fracking wells and from the air pollutants around them:

“Benzene is the major contributor to lifetime excess cancer risk from both scenarios,” the report stated.

Benzene is a known carcinogen according to Environmental Protection Agency and has been especially linked to incidences of leukemia. The University of Colorado report studied residents in rural Garfield County who lived within a half-mile of the wells. Fracking wells, once established, are often stationed in close proximity to local schools, parks and neighborhoods.

“I think the level of evidence that we currently have is enough to invoke the precautionary principal and take precautions to protect the public who live close to oil and gas development against the potential health effects of toxic exposure,” said Dr. Anne Epstein in a recent article for the Center for Public Integrity, a Pulitzer-prize winning investigative news agency. Dr. Epstein lives in Lubbock, Texas, a mid-sized city that sits at the edge of the Permian Basin, an area of intense fracking activity.

New study proves high levels of fracking-related chemicals in local drinking water

The evidence continues to mount when it comes to the link between fracking and cancer-causing tap water contamination. In a study published this past May in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, high levels of 2-n-Butoxyethanol (classified in the state of California as a hazardous substance) were found in Pennsylvania water supplies. The state of Pennsylvania has a particularly high number of fracking operations within its borders.

“The fact is that oil and gas drilling and fracking are poorly regulated and inherently risky,” said Thomas Cluderay, General Counsel for the Environmental Working Group (EWG), in response to the study. “This new study…drives home both of those unfortunate truths, with what EWG fears could be the first of many more signs showing threats to our drinking water. We need robust regulations and more studies to better understand and address the risks associated with these chemicals. We also need to move away from an economy based on fossil fuels and towards one based on renewable energy supplies.”

In fact, alternative energy fuels DO exist and must be pursued for the health of the planet, for the health of those currently living in close proximity to deadly fracking operations and for those who are at risk of breast cancer.
