The true connection between soy products and breast cancer

The true connection between soy products and breast cancer

(NaturalHealth365) Soy has been a highly controversial food among the health community for many years, primarily because of its estrogen-like effects in the body. Some tout it for its health benefits, including high protein and fiber content, as well as a slew of essential amino acids. However, soy also contains isoflavones, which are used by some women as a natural form of hormone replacement therapy in an effort to diminish the effects of menopause.

Isoflavone supplements contain much high concentrations of estrogen-like phytochemicals than whole soybeans do. While these supplements may seem to help women who desire relief from hot flashes and night sweats, they are linked to a serious and unintended complication. As has been suspected by many in the natural health community for a while, research from the University of Illinois has confirmed that the concentration of soy isoflavone in supplements may help drive tumor growth in women with estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer. (of course, all genetically modified soy products should be avoided)

How soy isoflavones stimulate breast cancer growth

In the study, researchers removed the ovaries of female mice to mimic the effects of post-menopausal women before implanting estrogen-receptor positive cancer tumors into the test subjects. The mice were divided into two groups – one fed a diet comprised of whole soybean-based foods and the other given only the isoflavones extracted from soybeans. At the conclusion of the study, the mice given whole soybean foods had lower levels of cancer-causing genes and higher levels of cancer-suppressing genes, as opposed to the isoflavone group which had high levels of cancer-causing genes known to ‘hide’ cancer cells from the body’s immune system.

The data provided from this study does not suggest that women should avoid soybeans altogether, but rather the concentration of isoflavones found in supplements. In fact, there may even be some breast health benefits associated with the consumption of whole soybeans – particularly in females who have eaten them since childhood or adolescence. Unfortunately, whole soybeans are not a basis of the standard Western diet, which instead tends to be highly processed and full of soybean extracts.

Interesting news: You can REVERSE breast cancer with a Macrobiotic diet

Estrogen-receptor (ER) positive cancer is a major health problem in the U.S., as it is the most common type of breast cancer in America. However, many people have naturally and successfully reversed the disease by making dietary changes – specifically by adopting a macrobiotic plant-based diet that is low in saturated fats and high in phytoestrogens. Interestingly, this includes the consumption of whole soy foods, such as organic tofu, tempeh, miso and natto.

In this video (below), Jonathan Landsman interviews Josephine Floyd, a breast cancer survivor. Listen carefully as Josephine talks about her beautiful experience of reversing breast cancer with macrobiotics.

Michio Kushi was the first to introduce macrobiotics to the United States back in the 1950s. He later went on to develop the Kushi Institute, a natural healing center dedicated to educational programs, services and information about macrobiotics. Instead of turning to Western solutions for ER positive breast cancer treatment, many women instead visit the world-famous Kushi Institute to learn how to safely use soy and other macrobiotics to fight, rather than stimulate breast cancer growth.
